The cheapest way to get to outer space is using an orbital elevator or orbital tower, but, as we explained here, we still do not have the materials for such a feat. For the moment we have to settle for the skyscrapers, which also constitute real challenges from an engineering point of view.
And, according to the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, in 2014 alone, more skyscrapers with a height greater than 200 meters were built than in any other year. The construction of 97 buildings of more than 200 meters in 54 cities was completed. If all these new skyscrapers were placed on top of each other, they would reach 23,333 meters high, that is, they would reach the stratosphere.
The tallest building built in 2014 was the Freedom Tower (One World Trade Center), of New York, which is 541.3 meters high, and is located on the site of the old Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Its height in feet (1,776) refers to the year in which the United States gained independence.
In the construction of this building, so much concrete (152,910 cubic meters) was used that with it a road could be built from New York to Chicago.
But this is nothing if we compare it with the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, which is 828 meters high. However, shortly I will build it will be overshadowed by the Kingdom tower, whose completion is planned in 2018, and will be raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It would surpass the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, in 172 meters. The total height, then, would triple the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
If 2014 has been an avalanche of buildings of more than 200 meters that have been built, for 2016 the avalanche of mega atos buildings, of more than 600 meters, is expected. At the moment, that year two will be inaugurated with that height. Most skyscrapers in the world rise in Asia.
Not everything is height
Building high is not always more expensive, as we read in the book Guinnes World Records 2015:
The tallest buildings are not necessarily the most expensive to build. In fact, only two of the top 10 are on this list of the five most expensive projects built to date.
And, in addition, not everything is the height if we seek to accommodate people:
Located in the heart of the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the Abraj Al-Bait Towers, also known as the Makka Royal Clock Tower Hotel, are the largest building in terms of capacity, with a total constructed area of 1,575,815 square meters, enough to accommodate 65,000 people.
